Place Value by David Adler, illustrated by Edward Miller, makes learning about place value fun, memorable, and meaningful for young learners. Perfect for Year 1 to Year 4 classrooms, this humorous picture book uses a troop of mischievous monkeys to demonstrate how ones, tens, hundreds, and beyond work in numbers.

As the monkeys bake the biggest banana cupcake ever, they quickly discover that getting the amounts right is no small feat, after all, there’s a big difference between 216 eggs and 621 eggs! Through clever illustrations, easy-to-follow charts, and amusing monkey antics, students are guided to understand the importance of place value in keeping numbers straight.

The book also explores:

How ten digits combine to make numbers, just as letters combine to make words

The effect of rearranging digits on the value of numbers

The basics of Hindu-Arabic number system and its basis in ten

How commas and decimal points work, including a simple introduction to numbers to the right of the decimal

Classroom idea:

Create a Frayer Chart:  Use a Frayer chart to explore the definition, examples and non-examples and facts and drawings related to words introduced in the book. For example: Digit, Number, Place Value.

Digit Rearranging Challenge: Provide students with digit cards and have them create as many different numbers as possible. Encourage them to note what happens when the digit is in the ones column, compared to when it is located in the tens column.

Whether you’re introducing place value for the first time or reinforcing it with older learners, Place Value is a lively and engaging resource that connects story, humour, and mathematics in a way students will remember.
