I trialled this resources in my own classroom over 5 years and every year it successfully helped my students to gain a deep understanding of place value.  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eEver since I have been sharing the ‘Target 1000 pockets’ idea with teachers through my PD sessions. Every time I share it, teachers ask if I could save the ‘sewing’ time and create a version that they could buy, so after 21 years… it is finally here!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e‘Target 1000’ centres around you setting the challenge for your class to collect 1000 bottle tops so as to help reduce the amount of landfill in Australia (and as an added bonus have a daily review of counting and place value!). \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eDid you know that often items smaller than a credit card (for example bottle top lids) cannot be recycled in Australia and therefore become landfill?\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThe Target 1000 pockets enable your class to organise and display the bottle tops they collect over the year. Students are encouraged to recycle bottle tops- HPPE #2 or HPPE #5 yoghurt lids from their house and bring them into the classroom. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eEach day, usually just before the end of the day bell, I would ask my students to bring out the bottle tops they had collected and we would use the ‘Target 1000’ pockets to count them. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eFirst we would fill the blue ‘ones’ pockets. Then when we filled 10 ‘ones’ pockets we would rename them as ‘1 ten’ and place them in a red ‘tens’ pocket. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eEach day we would update the number flip chat (included with the product) to represent the number of lids. The following day we would repeat the process. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOnce we filled 10 red ‘tens’ pockets we would then transfer them to the individual ‘1 ten’ pockets and place them in the yellow ‘hundred’ pocket. Placing the ten full ‘1 ten’ pockets in the ‘hundred’ pocket was a great visual reminder that within 1 hundred there are 10 tens and within each ten there are 10 ones. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis was a brilliant way to create a concrete representation for the notoriously abstract idea of renaming.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOver the year we built our collection and eventually reached our target of 1000 bottle tops.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eA couple of my classes were so enthusiastic they wanted to keep going beyond 1000! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBack in the day I placed all 1000 lids in a photocopy paper box marked ‘1 thousand’ but you can use the bag provided to house the 1000 lids. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThis product allows you to run a practical, simple, visual daily review of critical place value ideas in your classroom. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePS: If you are wondering what to do with the bottle tops once you have finished collecting them, in Australia we have a wonderful initiative called the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/banish.com.au\/blogs\/how-to\/what-brad-does-and-doesnt-accept\"\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBanish Recycling And Disposal Program\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e (\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBRAD) which happily collects and recycles HPPE #2,#4 and #5 lids. However, in the classroom it is often tedious to have children trying to make arrays with counters. The counters move, are not in straight lines, fall on the floor… basically the orientation and manipulation of the counters can take up too much cognitive load for our students and leave them not focused on the actual visual representation of an array.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOne resource I have found to be very useful to use instead is a pop-it. With a Pop-It students can create arrays quickly and easily. However, I have searched far and wide and found difficult to purchase 10x10 pop-its (allowing students to easily create every array to represent multiplication facts up to 10x10) that are not rainbow coloured.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIn my experience the rainbow colours distract students from seeing the array they are creating. Yet there are very few resources available that allow students to visualise the idea of units within units. Frustrated with the lack of resources in this critical area I decides to create my own. In my classroom I re-modelled a fishing tackle box to represent 1000 and then had 10 compartments within the box to represent hundreds and then includes tens and ones. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOver 15 years later, I have developed a resource for classrooms that is much more user friendly. I call the resource the ‘place value renaming box’. It features a rewritable lid where you can record what unit the box is representing for example 1 thousand or 1 one. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eThen inside the flip lid there are 10 x 6㎤ transparent cubes with rewritable labels that allow you to record the size of the unit (form example 1 hundred or 1 tenth)\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eInside each transparent box are 10x bead ‘rings’ that have 10 beads on each.
